Sa kauna-unahang pagkakataon ay magtatayo ang gobyerno ng pasilidad sa paggawa ng barko upang gawing moderno ang sektor ng maritime ng bansa.
“Thi will be the first shipbuilding facility that will be initiated under the Duterte administration,” sabi ni Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) General Manager Jay Santiago.
Layon nito na pagsama-samahin ang mga kumpanya na gumagawa ng mga sasakyan pandagat sa iisang lugar upang mai-promote ang local ship building industry.
“We have already completed our feasibility study. In fact, we have already identified the location. But we cannot disclose the location now because we don’t want to encourage speculations sa land holdings,” pahayag ni Santiago sa isang press conference.
Sa plano ng PPA, aabot sa 10 ektarya ang saklaw ng pasilidad na mayroong P300 million initial investment.
“‘Di kasama ang equipment and manpower. So we’re looking at an initial investment of P300 million. We want all of them to come together, to come up with a vessel. An assembly line that everybody will participate in, and there will be no competition among manufacturers,” ani Santiago.
“We expect those who will come in will be bringing in their equipment because they know how to jump start the manufacturing process,” dagdag pa niya.
Sa oras na maipatayo ang pasilidad ay gagawa ito ng mga sasakyang pandagat tulad ng leisure vehicles, roll-on/roll-off ships at fast craft.
“This is in line with the modernization thrust of the government. We want to deploy as many passenger vessels as possible. Also, we are retiring or decommissioning vessels that are unacceptable for the safety of our passengers,” sabi ni Santiago.
“There is a massive support from shipping operators, ship owners because they will be the customers of this shipbuilding facility,” dagdag pa niya.
